Join us to celebrate the new book Take Charge: Fitness at the Edge of Science and the lifelong achievements of the author and bodybuilder Clarence Bass at a symposium on the role of science in exercise prescription.  Three panels led by world-renowned experts will discuss the implications of recent research on physical training.  The symposium will be held at the H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports, a museum and research library dedicated to physical culture and sports.

This free public conference will be held on Friday, September 27th, 2013.  The Stark Center is located in the north end zone of the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin.  Events are scheduled from 10:30 AM-5:00 PM.  Guests are invited to tour the Stark Center and speak with panelists from 9:30-10:30 AM.

Panel 1: Aerobics/Strength Alliance 10:30 AM-12:00 PM; Professor Edward Coyle (Univ. Texas) discusses new research suggesting aerobic training and strength training may not be the discrete categories we think they are.

Panel 2: The Rise of Intervals 1:30-3:00 PM; Professor Joe Signorile (Univ. Miami) compares the effectiveness of interval training to steady-state aerobic training.

Panel 3: Forget Heavy, Think Effort 3:30-5:00 PM; Professor Richard Winett (Virginia Tech Univ.) will speak on the importance of effort, not weight lifted, for muscle growth and retention.

Panel commentators include Professor Kevin Fontaine (Univ. Alabama-Birmingham); Dave Goodin, MS, personal trainer and competitive bodybuilder; Dean Brignac, gym owner; Parker Reed, recreational runner, and lifter; Professor Wade Smith (Univ. of Colorado School of Medicine); and Doug McGuff, MD, gym owner and author of Body by Science.

University of Texas Professor Emeritus Waneen Spirduso, author of Physical Dimensions of Aging, will speak at a private dinner following the conference.  Clarence Bass will be signing copies of Take Charge, available for purchase, from 3:00-3:30 PM.
