One of the many reasons that we are pleased to have the on-going support of the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation is the close connection between Lutcher Stark and UT Athletics. As a member of the UT Board of Regents for 24 years, Stark was a strong supporter of the athletics program, in particular football. He helped establish the Longhorn name and reputation, initiated a funding drive to build a new football stadium, and hired Theo Bellmont as UT’s first athletic director. In 1910, Stark was the student-manager of that season’s football team. At that time, one of the manager’s primary tasks was to set the schedule by corresponding with other team managers – a process somewhat hindered by the lack of email, text messaging, and, in some location, even telephones. Click on the button below to read through a selection of the letters and telexes sent and received by Stark in creating the 1910 season.
