There’s a complex, somewhat dramatic, story to how the Stark Center came to be the home of the extensive health libraries of three important naturopaths: Christopher Gian-Cursio, Herbert Shelton, and Jesse Mercer Gehman – but that story begs its own page (coming soon!). All three naturopathic doctors were fascinated by the historical development of their field and all collected books and journals that documented that development. In total, the Stark Center holds over 9000 volumes and several dozen periodical titles that explore and expound health and wellness theories, methods, and philosophies, dating from the early 19th Century to the mid-20th Century. This collection has been cataloged and may be searched at UT Libraries catalog.
