Bob Samuels (1911- 2000) was a pioneer powerlifting and Olympic-style weightlifting competitor and coach. Born in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents, Samuels set records as a weightlifter. Samuels also worked as a coach for the New Orleans Athletic Club, the New Orleans YMCA, and Amateur Athletic Union. Samuels was both coach and a competitor for the U.S. weight lifting team for the 1965 Maccabiah Games. Other coaching highlights include the 1969 YMCA Weightlifting Championships and the 1967 A.A.U. international weight lifting contest between the U.S. and Mexico. Materials included in the collection are weightlifting publications, programs, correspondence, photographs, records and results of the events Bob coached.
