Hackenschmidt was a famous late-nineteenth-early-twentieth century weightlifter/wrestler who later authored several books on philosophy. Although Hackenschmidt was famous for his strength and is cited as the first professional wrestling world heavyweight champion, his work to promote exercise and wholesome diet as the way to ensure a healthy lifestyle was also landmark for its time. The majority of the collection consists of unpublished Hackenschmidt manuscripts, including two different versions of The Russian Lion Biography, various lectures, and essays and a small collection of correspondence. Of particular interest is the Hackenschmidt Scrapbook. As befitting Hackenschmidt’s talents and legacy, the scrapbook is a huge tome containing clippings, photographs, notes, and other memorabilia. The Stark Center is pleased to provide digital access to the scrapbook.
